The Best Candidates for Labia Reduction

The normal female external genitalia have two sets of labia: the labia majora and labia minora. The labia majora are the larger outer lips that are normally formed by hair-bearing skin. The labia minora are the smaller inner lips. They are more delicate and are hairless. Normally the labia minora protrude slightly beyond the level of the labia majora.

Some women have labia minora that protrude far beyond the level of the labia majora and consider this appearance unattractive or unsightly. Other women find that they have one side larger than the other. In some women, the labia minora protrudes so far that they experience discomfort and even pain. This pain can occur when sitting on bikes or stools. Some women experience pain with intercourse. In severe cases some women may experience pain when running or even walking. Fortunately, this condition can be improved by undergoing labiaplasty.

How labiaplasty /Labia Reduction Is Performed

Labia reduction, also called a labioplasty or labialplasty, is a relatively minor operation that is performed in the clinic. Most  patients prefer to have the operation performed under general anesthesia, where they are put completely asleep. If you are going to be under general anesthetic, a board-certified anesthesiologist will administer your anaesthetic, stay with you during the entire operation, and will be there as you wake up.

During the operation, a small amount of labia tissue is carefully removed in order to correct the patient’s problem. Plastic surgery techniques are then used to complete the procedure including the use of small dissolving stitches.

Following your cosmetic surgery procedure, you will stay in our recovery room until you are wide awake and ready to go home. If  you’ve had a general anesthetic, then someone needs to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours.

Recovery Following Labia Reduction

Following your labiaplasty procedure you will need to wash the area with soap and water regularly and to wear a light pad or sanitary napkin for a week. Although we give all of our labia reduction patients a prescription for pain relief medications, there is some pain associated with this operation specially in first 24 to 48 hours

There will be slight swelling and bruising for a few days but this subsides quickly. You should not have sex or use a tampon for 3-4 weeks following surgery. The sutures are dissolving sutures and will come out on their own. Most patients tell us that the operation hurt less and was much easier than they thought it would be.

Labiaplasty recovery can vary depending on the individual, but here’s a general timeline of what to expect:

  • The first week:  You will likely experience swelling, soreness, and bruising in the vulvar area.  Your doctor will prescribe pain medication to help manage discomfort. It’s important to get plenty of rest during this time and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Weeks 2-4: The swelling and bruising should start to subside, but you may still experience some discomfort. You can start to gradually resume light activity, but avoid anything that could irritate the incision site.
  • Weeks 4-6: Most people are able to return to their normal activities by this point, including work and exercise. However, you should still avoid sexual intercourse until your doctor gives you the green light.
  • 3 months:  Most of the swelling should be gone by now, and you should be able to see the final results of your surgery.

Here are some additional tips for a smooth recovery:

  • Apply ice packs to the vulvar area to reduce swelling and pain.

Icing recommendations can vary depending on the specific surgery, but here’s a general guideline:

  • First 24 to 48 hours: This is typically the most crucial period for icing. You might ice for 15-20 minutes at a time, and repeat every 20 minutes or two hours,or as often as possible.
  • After 48 hours: You can usually reduce the frequency to 4 times a day, maintaining 15-20 minute sessions.
  • Duration: It’s important not to exceed recommended times.  Generally, doctors recommend using ice for several days or even weeks, until swelling and pain subside.
  • After 48 hours, ttake sitz baths to help relieve pain and promote healing. Use sitz baths (sit in water that covers your vulvar area) a few times a day. Keep the incision site clean and dry.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics.
