At Dr Tehmina’s Clinic. we fully understand the sensitive nature of hymen repair surgery, and the importance that this surgery can mean in a woman’s life. More and more women are opting for hymen repair surgery for a variety of reasons, some seek the procedure in order to satisfy religious and cultural beliefs, for some women hymen repair can offer psychological and emotional relief following sexual abuse or trauma, and for others hymen repair is sought out in order to repair an injured hymen due to other factors besides intercourse. Whatever your reason, you should not feel alone or uncomfortable in your choice to have hymen repair surgery.
The hymen is a thin layer of tissue that encloses the vaginal area. The hymen can easily break in many situations outside of intercourse, including vigorous activities such as horseback riding or gymnastics, the insertion of tampons, or even during regular pap smears. Many women may not even be aware that their hymen has torn, as there may be little to no blood loss and no pain.
Hymen repair surgery, also known as hymenoplasty, is a simple procedure that will repair a torn hymen or build a hymen that is not present. It is not a vaginal tightening procedure.
Six weeks after surgery, your hymen will be healed and restored. It is important to understand that the bleeding associated with the tearing of the surgically produced hymen is just as unpredictable as it is with a natural hymen.
The best hymenoplasty candidates are women who are in good health and who feel strongly about having their hymen repaired.
The surgery needs to be performed at least 6 weeks prior to future intercourse
If you are considering this sensitive surgery, you should feel absolutely confident in all aspects of the surgery. Many women find discussing the nature of this surgery to be difficult.
Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr Tehmina. During your consultation she will be there to listen to all your questions and concerns, she will speak openly to you about the reasons for which you are having the surgery, and she will be able to walk you through all the details of your procedure.
Dr Tehmina will outline ways in which to prepare for your hymen repair surgery from how to prepare for your recovery to guidelines on what steps to take to be fully ready for the procedure. You will also require a gynecological examination prior to your hymen repair surgery.
Hymen repair surgery is performed by Dr tehmina in a facility that meets and exceeds medical standards when it comes to equipment, sanitation, infection control, as well as nursing and medical staff.
You can be confident that you will be in the best hands and that you will be met with the highest standards of medical care prior to your surgery, during your procedure, and as you recover.
You will be able to go home the same day as your procedure, and although you can return to work the day following your hymen repair surgery we advise that you also take things slow and give yourself time to rest in order to allow your body to heal.
Following your hymen repair surgery you will need to gently wash the area with soap and water regularly. There will be slight swelling and bruising for 2-4 weeks, but pain should be very minimal and should be gone within a week of surgery. You will receive a prescription for pain medication and antibiotics to assist with any pain and to prevent infection.
You should also avoid, wearing tight underwear (such as thongs), heavy lifting and any strenuous activities as this may negatively affect your healing. The sutures will dissolve and come out on their own.
You should be able to resume a light exercise routine one week after surgery. Avoid heavy lifting or a strenuous exercise routine for 4-6 weeks.
Every operation has risks and potential complications. Fortunately, the vast majority of our hymenoplasty patients have no problems with their surgery and are extremely happy with their results.
Risks are rare but when they do occur additional medications or even surgery may be required. Such risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, pain with intercourse, and deformity. Also, the amount of bleeding upon first intercourse following surgery cannot be predicted. However, most patients never experience these risks, as they are quite rare.
Hymen repair surgery typically takes less than one hour. In women who have a torn hymen, Dr Tehmina will use self-dissolving stitches in order to stitch together the remaining pieces. This will allow the hymen to grow back together as it heals.
In women who have no remnants of the hymen remaining or have been born without a hymen, Dr Tehmina will tighten the vaginal entrance and use a small portion of the vaginal tissue to create a new hymen. This constructed hymen is very similar to the natural hymen.
Hymen repair is not considered a permanent surgery. Hymen repair will last until your hymen is broken again, usually naturally when you engage in intercourse for the first time after your procedure. If you do not engage in intercourse following your procedure your hymen should remain intact until you do so, unless it breaks due to vigorous activities, early vaginal insertion, or other unforeseen reasons, all of which are typically rare in occurrence.
The complexity of any surgery varies from patient to patient, which is why the cost of hymen repair surgery can only be determined once you have had a consultation and physical examination with Dr Tehmina
Once you have had a consultation we will be able to give you a firm quote for your hymen repair procedure.
